History

We know that history can help children to gain a better understanding of the complexity of people’s lives; why and how things change; as well as the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups of people. It also helps them to understand their own identity and the challenges of their time. We want to develop a future generation, who can learn from the past and help to build a better, brighter future for everyone.

Engaging lessons

By studying a broad range of history-based topics, our children learn about significant people, events and places, from both the recent, and the more distant, past. We teach them the historical skills of asking perceptive questions, thinking critically, being able to weigh up evidence and sift arguments, as well as develop sound perspectives and judgement within and across the different time periods they study. Wherever possible, trips and visitors are included to enhance the learning experience, and we place a high value on exploring the rich history of our local area.

Black History Month

Black History Month, every October, is a UK-wide celebration of the contribution that black African and Caribbean communities have made, both at a local level, and across the globe. At Grinling Gibbons, we remind ourselves about some of the struggles that people have had to overcome in the past, and we celebrate the cultural diversity of our school community. This is done through the study of a two-week-long whole-school cross-curricular themed project, which ends in an evening of multi-cultural food tasting and music, where children showcase what they have learned.
