The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013 to 2014 and 2014 to 2015 to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools.
This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – is being allocated to primary school headteachers. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
Total funding grant available to schools in the Grinling Gibbons and Lucas Vale (GGLV) for 2016-2017 = £18,900.

Funding priorities 2016-17
- Develop staff expertise in teaching games and gymnastics – impact: lessons will be well planned, engaging and as a result pupil will grow in confidence and develop a positive approach to their health and well-being.
- Recruit quality specialist coaches to deliver aspects of the PE curriculum and after school clubs – impact: improved motivation at school, reducing anxiety and depression, increased positive effect on pupils studying in school resulting in increased pupils’ attainment and progress in all subject areas.
- To increase pupil participation in competitions and tournaments – impact: pupils build on team building skills, grow in confidence transferring skills acquired as a result to other areas of the curriculum.
- Purchase specialist and additional resources to support the delivery of a broader range of new sports – i.e. fencing and archery – impact: pupils are introduced to a wider variety of activities that would otherwise be inaccessible to them; supports raising aspirations.
- To offer a range of outdoor and adventurous pursuits for pupils in Year 3, 4 and 5 – impact: will be providing opportunities to children who do not have access to this in Lewisham. Target aim also here is to promote development of team building skills. Securing positive transition from Year 6 to 7 is also an expected outcome from this focus.
- Targeted provision for pupils identified gifted and talented in physical education, sports and dance – impact: identified pupils are encouraged to work to their full potential. Provision fosters development of personal qualities enabling them to achieve potential across the broad curriculum.
- To expand the range of opportunities provided in the annual Healthy Schools fortnight focus such that outcomes for pupils cross the broad curriculum range of Education, Health, Culture, Media and Sports – impact: pupils develop healthy behaviours and as a result raise their achievement outcomes and tackle obesity. Increase extra-curricular provision, by providing subsidized sports clubs.
