Reception’s Adventures

The Discover Centre

Another 2 months have gone by and what have the highlights been for Reception?

Definitely the first, was our trip to The Discover Centre in Stratford.  There, we explored the different worlds inside the books of Julia Donaldson – clink on link

The children…  dressed as witches and rode the broomstick from ‘Room on the Broom’; pretended to be Super Worm and fished for lost things down the well; dressed as The Gruffalo’s child and met The Gruffalo himself; sat on the whale – just like the snail in ‘The snail and the Whale’; and played in Charlie Cook’s kitchen and sat on his special chair.

A story teller read us the book ‘Zog’ and then we all joined in with some games to help us make up our own stories, before going out to explore their amazing outside play space.  All the children had a fantastic time and the exhibition is open until September 2018 so there’s plenty of time for you to visit at the weekend or in the holidays with your child.

Back in class, we built on this learning by reading all of Donaldson’s stories, drawing and painting the different characters like The Gruffalo, making Stick Man out of real twigs, getting messy with scrambled snake and owl ice cream, dressing up as witches and making up our own spells, building our own rooms from ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ out of lego, as well as lots of reading, writing and counting.

Class Assembly

Then in February we shared our work with parents at our very first class assembly.  Click on the link below to see our performance of The Gruffalo and a PDF’s-1st-class-assembly.pdf of some of the learning we shared.

It’s Snow Time!

A sudden burst of snowy weather at the end of the month, gave us the chance to explore what happens outside, and while the very cold temperatures meant we couldn’t be outside as much as we would have liked, we did wrap up warm so the children could take a closer look at what the extreme weather had done to our outside area!  They examined the ice and made prints in the snow, and generally had lots of snowy fun!

Now we’ve started work on ‘The 3 Billy Goats Gruff’ and our topic of ‘Growing’ so look out for our next blog where we will share our latest learning on that.
