Year 5B’s Vicious Vikings!

Nov 1, 2017 | Year 5

We have gotten off to an excellent start here in Year 5B. Our topic this term is the Vicious Vikings and we have had a wail of time exploring the Viking timeline. From this, we have established where they came from, settled and have used Atlases to locate the Viking territories.

This term in English we have been focussing on adventure stories and children have begun to write their own versions of this. These have been filled with action, fantasy, suspense and nail biting moments. Children have also been excited to share their writing in class, this we believe will only further develop high level readers and writers in our school.

In maths this term, we are consolidating place value as well as addition and subtraction. As a team, we have a focus on quick recall of all timetables and children have been actively practicing these in class. Please continue to encourage children to learn these at home.

We are also incredibly excited to have gone to the Science Museum this term and children have already learnt so much about our topic on Forces. We have completed a range of activities in class about gravity, air resistance, water resistance and children can now explain how a force reacts on an object.

I am sure you have already seen some of the amazing homework that your children have completed and these have been wonderful to see and share in class. Please continue to support your children when completing these at home.

Music is in the air…. from the sweet, rhythm of steel pans! Our children have been enjoying learning how to play these in school and they sound fantastic!

As a school, we also have the wonderful opportunity of working with a gardener enabling the children to develop their understanding of plants and nature. Children return to classes enthusiastically each week with their new found knowledge.

We are excited once again to go to the BUPA care homes and share our experiences with the elderly, we have many fun activities planned for this.

Our yearly key stage 2 school ‘Sleepover’ and ‘Black History Month celebrations have been a success and children have had so much fun! And are still going wild about the details of this.

Stay tuned for more exciting things to come!!
